PROFILE

Ulf Tranow is a sociologist whose research focuses on solidarity, integration, and conflict in liberal democracies. He has held positions as Assistant Professor of Sociological Theory and later as Senior Lecturer at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. In addition, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies in Bochum, served as co-editor of the interdisciplinary journal Analyse & Kritik, and taught as a lecturer at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul.

In his current work, Ulf Tranow addresses several topics at the intersection of social science and socio-political practice. One major focus concerns the relationship between religion and solidarity. Here, he is particularly interested in the dual potential of religion as a resource for both particularistic and universal forms of solidarity, and in the conditions under which these different potentials become effective.

A further line of research examines “social integration through conflict.” In this context, he analyses the mechanisms through which conflicts can contribute to the integration of pluralist democracies and discusses the practical implications for the design of conflict frameworks.

A third area of work focuses on the conditions of democratic resilience. In this context, he examines which institutions, network resources, and civil society norms contribute to the strengthening of democracy. At BIM, he is affiliated with the project Political (In-)Equality in the Post-Migrant Democracy (PoMigDem), where these issues are studied in relation to the threat situations faced by local elected officials.
