Prof. Dr. Petra Stanat

Head of the Department "Education and Integration"; Director of the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) at the Humboldt University of Berlin

Since 2010, Prof. Dr. Petra Stanat is director of the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She received her Master's Degree (Diplom) in Psychology at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1992. In 1998, she completed her Ph.D. in Social and Personality Psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Subsequently, Petra Stanat worked as a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin where she managed the international part of the first cycle of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for Germany. She habilitated in Education at the Freie Universität Berlin in 2005.

Thereafter she took on a position as Professor for Research on Learning and Instruction at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg where she also acted as Managing Director of the University’s Central Institute for Research on Learning and Instruction (2005-2007). Subsequently she held a position as Professor for Educational Science at the Freie Universität Berlin (2007-2010).

Prof. Stanat’s research activities focus on conditions and support measures of immigrant students’ educational success, especially with regard to second language acquisition and its facilitation. She is currently conducting several research projects funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) [German Research Foundation] and the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) [Federal Ministry of Education and Research].

She is amongst others member of the DFG-Fachkollegium Erziehungswissenschaft [Review board Education Sciences of the German Research Foundation], member of the Advisory Board of the Bundesinstitut bifie (Bildungsforschung, Innovation & Entwicklung des österreichischen Schulwesens) [Federal Institute bifie (Educational Science, Innovation & Development in the Austrian Educational System)] and member of the Editorial Board of the Zeitschrift für Pädagogik [Journal of Education].

Current Funded Research

2013 - 2016. Academic Language Competencies (BiSpra): Affordances, Language Processing, and Diagnostics (in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Sabine Weinert). Funding: Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

2009 - 2016. National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), Section: Education acquisition of persons with migration background with language and identity as main topics (as a member of the NEPS consortium). Funding: Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) at the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg.

2012 - 2015. Effects of second-language instruction in primary school. A detailed analyses of the conditions for success. (in cooperation with Dr. Anja Felbrich). Funding: Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

2012 - 2015. The role of immigrants' first and second language proficiency for social integration, particularly in education: Analyses of NEPS data (in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Cornelia Kristen). Funding: German Research Foundation (Project within Priority Programme 1646 “Education as a Lifelong Process“).

2012 - 2015. Competence Acquisition and Learning Preconditions (in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Cornelia Kristen and Prof. Dr. Irena Kogan). Funding: Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
