Current focus of work


 
Since 2002, Prof. Heinz has been Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Hospital Charité, Campus Mitte in Berlin. There, he heads the AG Transkulturelle Psychiatrie together with Dr. Ulrike Kluge, among others.

In the winter semester 2014/2015, Andreas Heinz took over the Karl-Jaspers-Gastprofessor an der Universität Oldenburg.
 


Academic career


 
In 1988, Prof. Heinz received his doctorate on the topic of "Regression in schizophrenics - a pathogenetic concept in historical change" under Prof. Dr. Viefhues at the Institute for Social Medicine at the Ruhr University in Bochum with magna cum laude. In the same year, he received his license to practice medicine from the Berlin Medical Association. This was followed by residency training in neurology at the Neurological University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum under Prof. Dr. Przuntek.

From 1988-1994 he studied philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and the Ruhr University of Bochum, graduating with a Magister artium.

This was followed by studies in anthropology until 1997, also at the Free University of Berlin and Howard University in Washington DC. At the same time, he completed his residency in psychiatry in 1995 at the Psychiatric Clinic and Polyclinic of Freie Universität under Prof. Dr. H. Helmchen.

In 2014, he completed his philosophical dissertation on "The Concept of Mental Illness" with Prof. Krüger at the Institute of Philosophy, University of Potsdam, summa cum laude.

From 1997-1998 he was a senior physician at the Neurological University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Przuntek) and habilitated in psychiatry at the Free University Berlin in 1998 under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Helmchen with the topic "The dopaminergic reinforcement system - function, connection to other neurotransmitter systems and pathopsychological correlates".

From 1998-1999 he was granted a leave of absence for further training in social medicine and for the establishment of the Neurological Specialist Clinic Feldberg/MV in the position of chief physician (Medical Dir.: Prof. Dr. Przuntek).

In 2000, he was appointed to the C3 professorship for addiction research at the University of Heidelberg.

From 1999-2002 he was senior consultant at the Clinic for Dependent Behavior and Addiction Medicine (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Mann).
