Tunay Altay is a PhD candidate in Humboldt University’s Department of Diversity and Social Conflict.

His research and teaching focus on
 

  • citizenship
  • migration
  • sexuality


As part of his cumulative dissertation, he is investigating the historical, socio-economic and institutional factors that affect the lives of marginalized people and how they respond to discrimination, stigmatization, and racism in Germany.

His previous work involved qualitative studies of the experiences of queer people of colour and Bulgarian sex workers in Berlin. His research has been supported by the DAAD and Institute for Social Sciences, among others.

In addition, Altay writes cultural commentaries about

  • politics
  • popular culture
  • activism


in Germany and Turkey.

He is a board member of the European Network for Queer Anthropology (ENQA) and one of the organizers of SVR Gender Studies at Humboldt University.

Altay is also involved in community-organizing for migrants and LGBTQ groups in Berlin.

Tunay Altay graduated from Koç University’s Faculty of Law and completed his minor in International Relations in 2014. Later, he completed his master’s studies in Critical and Cultural Studies at Boğaziçi University in 2019. Altay also studied at University of Berkeley, California as a visiting student.

He worked as a research assistant for a Scientific Research Project (SRP) in 2017-2018 and as a project member for European Fulbright Diversity Initiative between 2018-2019.

Altay currently offers a course at Humboldt University on borders and citizenship.
