East German identity is reflected not only in voting behaviour – but also in pop culture.
This is exemplified by bands such as Kraftklub, Feine Sahne Fischfilet and the electro
duo Calcou, who appear in this video. Researchers are also taking an interest in this
phenomenon. Sociologist Daniel Kubiak, who works at the BIM in the field of migration
research, has observed a growing interest in the East in people’s own life stories and
origins which finds expression in popular culture – and is linked to the upheavals of the
nineties: “There is an ambivalent sense of solidarity with one’s own parents.”
