We will focus on migration, diversity and inequality from a global perspective. In the aftermath of the current migration movements from Syria and other places of war and hardship, we want to analyze the impact these movements have upon the involved societies of transit and arrival. The Summer University focuses on the reactions that are evoked in the respective societies - both on the level of state institutions and in civil society. In each local context particular narratives, policies and histories are in place that frame how migration is dealt with. Special attention will be paid to the concepts of diversity and citizenship. The Summer University brings together three main angles of analysis: 1. The use of a comparative perspective to analyze different ways migration movements are dealt with and reacted to within countries of transit and arrival. 2. A focus on the relationships and tensions between state institutions and civil society. 3. An investigation of the conditions of the rights to permanent or temporal residency for migrants and refugees in the countries of their arrival, in addition to questions of participation and citizenship. We will bring together international academic and non-academic experts and students from various disciplines to share their perspectives on these issues, to investigate and systematize their knowledge and to share research from several global contexts such as South Africa, Israel, Turkey, USA and Europe. They will study, teach and learn together, put together a set of methods and investigate the landscape of current migration societies. Senior researchers, M.A. and Phd students will work together to gain new understandings of how migration changes societies. This learning from change will result in a book publication and further research collaboration on an international level with our
fellow from Wits-University from Johannesburg, South Africa.
