Modes of Action for Different Municipalities in the Field of Working with Refugees

Since a few years the honorary commitment especially in the area of working with refugees is increasing. Since the summer of 2015 and in reaction to the rising number of refugees in Germany the commitment even intensified, but only a few researchers are engaged in this new field of research (Karakayali/Kleist 2015). According to recent surveys, volunteers take over tasks that are rather in the state`s area of responsibility. On this account volunteers working with refugees have to cooperate with the municipal administrations to a great extent.
This object of research is of social and political importance, as the success of the cooperation could also influence the development of a culture of welcome or of distance in the general contact to refugees.

With the previous considerations in mind, in this research project we will analyze different forms of collaboration between municipalities and voluntary initiatives in Germany and we will examine how this cooperation is rated by the participants. We assume that the impact and effect of the particular forms of collaboration also depend on the initial conditions of the cooperation. Therefore we want to include a broad range of municipalities in the study.
